Thoughts for the Adventure
February 2, 2012

This last weekend the Winter X Games were held at Buttermilk.  Over 100,000 people flooded our valley for four days of intense competition and a good time.  I have a great deal of respect for any athlete that is focused and disciplined enough to compete at this level.

Although I am a skier and not likely to ever snowboard, my family and I enjoyed watching a number of the events, especially the SuperPipe competition.

While I watched the finals at home with two of our children, Regina saw Shaun White live as he scored a perfect 100 on his final run of the evening.  A perfect score has never been achieved in the sport and whether or not you follow snowboarding, it is an incredible feat.

But perhaps what is most striking is that while Shaun is arguably the best in the world in his sport, he did not reach that level by being perfect.  In fact, most events he has won he has scored in the 90s.

This reminds me of other sports in which the finest never achieve 100%.  For example, in major league baseball, a person is at the top of the game if he ends up on base 4 out of 10 times, meaning 6 out of 10 times the person fails.

All of this causes me to wonder why we as fallible human beings ever expect complete perfection in ourselves or others.  Is there really a perfect vacation, meal, companion, church, server, or product?

I believe there is no such thing so perhaps we should cut ourselves and others some proverbial slack.  As people of faith, God does not call us to live life perfectly, but rather trusting in the only one who was and is perfect, his Son our Savior, Jesus.

After all, if human beings were capable of perfection, we would not need a Savior.  Nor would there be war, broken relationships, unhappiness, upset, sickness, pollution, or any other ill we are confronted with each day.

While lack of perfection does not mean we should not do our best and strive for excellence, it does mean to leave perfection where it belongs, with God. Perhaps too we should embrace the fact that life is often perfectly imperfect.

Kids & Families

I love overhearing those moments in the car or the living room between my kids when I can just sit back and enjoy the dialogue. One recent morning this was the backseat conversation starter posed by sibling #1: "If God is so powerful that He can create anything, I wonder if he's ever created something too heavy for Him to carry?" To which sibling #2 replied: "No, because if He can create anything, then He can just create more power for himself to carry something super heavy." Out of the mouths of babes (ok, in my case, it's more 'out of the mouths of teens…'). It reminded me of the Footprints in the Sand poem: during our most trying periods of life, God carries us. Nothing is ever too big, ugly or onerous that God can't see us through. Just ask your kids!

10:45am "40 DAYS IN THE WORD" STUDY

Learn the Word. Love the Word. Live the Word! Continuing this Sunday, the Chapel will offer week 4 of the Bible study called "40 Days in the Word," another exciting small-group opportunity from Saddleback Resources. God's Word is not meant just to inform you, but to transform you. God never meant for Bible study to simply increase our knowledge. Reading and reflecting on the Bible is useless if we fail to put God's Word into practice. If we want our lives to be blessed by God we must become "doers of the Word" (James 1:22–25 KJV). Join Heather & Gary Beach after church on Sundays, from 10:45 to noon, through February 19. Please email your interest in joining the study to heather@beachresource.com. Suggested donation for materials is $10.
