Spring at Snowmass Chapel

Literacy Outreach Program
The Chapel Outreach committee has designed a new program under the supervision of Charis Caldwell. With $2,500 as seed money, a literacy program has been established to put books in children's hands this summer in the Sopris School District. These selected children are challenged to continue their reading skills during the summer months. The 10 week program will be lead by a Spanish speaking teacher who has already established a relationship with these children and will bring new books to exchange each week with the young readers.

Tasaru Scholarship Fund
A young Masai woman has been chosen to receive the Snowmass Chapel Educational Scholarship through the Tasaru girl's school in Kenya. Her name is Semerian Pere (her Christian name is Janet). She has applied to a Teacher's College and is awaiting word of her acceptance. A Chapel Outreach donation of $1,500 will cover her expenses for two years, giving this young woman the chance for a self-sustainging future as a teacher. According to our liaison, "she's a very 'serious' girl, though also very funny. She reads the bible voraciously, and anything else she can get her hands on." Please keep Semerian's acceptance in your prayers.

Mercy and Sharing
The Chapel received a thank you letter from Haiti children's mission projects, Mercy and Sharing. Recently the Chapel Outreach sent $2,000 to these needy children. We understand that these funds bought a 40 foot shipping container of diapers. It has been reported that 7,000 diapers are used in a month. Susie and Joe Krabacher, founder and leaders of this worthy mission send their heart felt thanks!

Heifer Project Update
To date, the children have collected $365.23. The chapel has matched these funds for a donation of $730 for this mission of hope and which will purchase 1 cow, 1 bee hive, 1 goat, 2 flocks of chicks and seedlings. The mission of the Heifer Internaional is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. Each initial gift is multiplied as recipients agree to "pass on the gift" by giving one or more of the animal's offspring to another in need. The children's goal is to raise $5,000 enough to purcahse an ark full of animals during the Church calendar year ending November 30, 2008. Your support is appreciated.
